STM gives out books at Piney Branch Elementary School on May 24, 2019

We had a great time at our first school-wide distribution of books at Piney Branch Elementary School (grades 3-5) on May 24, 2019. The students had a fun time and we enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm as they each picked out a book and a handmade bookmark to take home. Our thanks to Principal Christine Oberdorf for allowing us to come, Reading Specialist Rob Bledsoe who coordinated the distribution, teachers who brought the students to visit us, our volunteers who made the wonderful bookmarks, and our partners at Books by the Foot. We’re looking forward to our visit at Takoma Park Elementary School next week. #books #reading #kindness

Girl Scout Troop 44054 crafts blankets and toiletry bags for those in need on May 19, 2019

STM had a fantastic time with Girl Scout Troop 44054 on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Troop 44054 decorated and filled 20 reusable toiletry bags and made 3 large tied fleece blankets for the underserved families at The National Center for Children and Families. The scouts collected and sorted toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpastes, soap/body washes, shampoos/conditioners, toilet paper, deodorants, and body lotions before filling their decorated toiletry bags with them. They kindly donated the remainder of their collection to us for future use. Our thanks to Strathmore Children’s Chorus for their generous donation of socks that were also included in these toiletry bags. Kudos to Troop 44054 and Troop leader Djahna Akinyemi for their continued kindness to those in need and for their generous donation that will be used to support our Books for Bedtime literacy program. #kindness #literacy

Arts on the Block donates supplies to STM on May 18, 2019

Our sincere thanks to Arts on the Block/Anne L’Ecuyer, Executive Director and Christopher Barclay, Operations Director for sharing your wonderful art supplies with us TODAY on Saturday May 18, 2019. We picked up lots of amazing stained glass, ribbon, tee shirts, and ceramic tiles. We’ll be using the glass to make mosaics with the underserved kids at Community CHEER’s Lunch and Learn Camp this summer.
It was so great making some new friends! We hope to visit you in your new space at Silver Spring Library soon.

STM makes monster stuffies with Daisy Troop #3103 on May 6, 2019.

STM had a fantastic time working with Daisy Troop #3103 making monster stuffies on May 6, 2019. The Daisies did an amazing job making creatures with incredible details including bows, eyelashes, ears, whiskers, and braided hair. Their wonderful creations will be stuffed and sewn up and once finished will be donated to the The Children’s Inn at NIH Thoughtful Treasures Program which places a small gift in each patient’s mailbox for each day of their stay. The Daisies also donated brand new books for our Books for Bedtime literacy program. Thank you Daisies for being so kind and thoughtful! We can’t wait to work with you again next year when you are Brownies! 🙂

Diya delivers 100 monster stuffies to Children’s National Medical Center on May 1, 2019

STM was really happy to honor a simple request from Diya’s family that she help deliver the monster stuffies that were made at her birthday party in January to Children’s National Medical Center. Diya’s family thought it would be a nice way for her to support her baby brother’s upcoming treatment there. Diya did a wonderful job donating 100 monster stuffes (20 of these were created at her party) to their Surgical Recovery Unit on May 1, 2019. Thank you Diya for taking an active hand in serving others and spreading kindness! We’re proud of you!

STM had a wonderful opportunity to design some cool souvenir buttons for a Craftster meetup in Asheville, NC this past weekend. Our friends on Craftster have supported us in so many ways and will always have a special place in our hearts. We hope they will treasure this little keepsake as much as we treasure them.
